50 Day World Challenge: Introduction to Project and Day 1 Topic

Head on over to the site http://coffeechug.posterous.com/50-day-world-challenge-introduction-to-projec

I was on Facebook the other day and I came across a post of one of my friends who was partaking in a 50 Day Challenge. I was reading through the 50 posts that are part of this project and I thought, “This would be a great idea to help bridge people from around the world.”
So, I decided to take the framework of the 50 Day Challenge, add the word “World”, change some of the topics and give it a whirl.

What you are reading is the first of the 50 days in the challenge. It will not be a daily assignment. Instead it will probably be a few a week or one a week to give people time to post and submit.

My goals are twofold

1. Connect with as many countries as possible.
2. Learn about ourselves, our countries, our cultures, and help everyone realize that the world is indeed “flat” as suggested by Thomas Friedman

So, without rambling on any longer here 50 Day Challenge: Day 1

The Topic: A picture of yourself with fifteen facts. This is designed to help us get to know each other a little bit more. Facts that you share are up to you, but remember this will be viewed by many(hopefully) and is designed to be an educational experience.
I will post my picture and 15 facts later tonight.

Remember, if you wish to submit a picture or two simply subscribe using the green button at www.coffeechug.posterous.com or email me your post at coffeechug@posterous.com and I will load it up for you.
I look forward to a great journey with all of you. Feel free to spread the word and have others join us on this exploration of people at their finest around the world.

Valentine’s Day Around The World

Today is Valentine’s Day. I was reading a little bit about the holiday on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valentine%27s_Day and became curious about how you celebrate the day?
How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day?
I communicate with another teacher in Bulgaria quite a bit and this is what she had to say about the holiday
Before the Democracy  people in our country  celebrated “Trifon zarezan” instead of   St.Valentine
St. Trifon is considered the keeper of the vineyards. It is celebrated by wine growers, gardeners and tavern-keepers. Early in the morning the housewife kneads bread. Moreover, she  cooks a whole chicken, which is traditionally filled with rice.  The bread, chicken and a wooden vessel of wine are put in a new woolen bag . With these bags on their shoulders the men go into the vineyard. There they make sign of the cross, take pruning knives and three hubs as each cutting three sticks. Then again,  make sign of the cross and sprinkle with some wine  the vines. This ritual is called “Cutting”. Then all come together and choose a “king” of the vineyards. Only then began the  feast.
20 years ago St. Valentine became a famous day of people in love and now both feasts are being celebrated.
I know that for me personally, I think it has become a holiday for businesses to make money. People exchange Valentine cards with each other, buy lots of candy, and go out to eat. My son is having a little party in his kindergarten class today and my daughter had a party in her preschool class. It is a day to show your love for your loved ones.
I am just curious to know how it is celebrated around the world.

A Quick Little Meal 2.13.11

I have not posted any food items in a while so I thought I would snap a picture from yesterday from out lunch. This is a quick little meal that my kids love. It is just little pasta rings called SpaghettiO’s that is mixed in a tomato/cheese sauce. It is a delicious little treat.

Cold Temperatures in Iowa Today 2.9.11

I do not have any new pictures to add today, but just wanted to mention how cold it is. It is currently 3 degrees Fahrenheit which is -16 degress Celsius. However, when you add in windchill it feels like -13 F or -25 C

This is cold my friends. To be outside for short amount of time hurts your skin and does not feel good at all.

Tonight it will drop to -10 F and who knows how cold it will feel then.

Feel free to post your weather images to the blog by either subscribing to the blog at www.coffeechug.posterous.com or emailing your pictures and info to coffeechug@posterous.com

Snowstorm – the morning of…….

I have been tracking the progress of wind and snow during our snowstorm since yesterday when school was released. I was outside today for quite a long time shoveling and snowblowing all the snow. It was quite the workout. I decided to make a short little video to show the snow this morning. Hope you enjoy and as with all the other posts, don’t be scared to get involved and upload photos and video of where you live and the weather. We would love to learn something about your location.

Post photos and video to my Posterous site at http://coffeechug.posterous.com/
