Speaking

Coffeechug made it a personal goal to overcome the fear of public speaking a few years ago when he started off presenting at ITAG (Iowa Talented and Gifted Conference). From the first presentation there has been no looking back as I have fallen in love with the powerful collaboration and networking opportunities that come from sharing ideas. If I stress to others that they need to celebrate their strengths and share with the world their gifts, then I need to lead by example and share what I feel is helpful to educators. I am available to help run workshops, PD, conference sessions, and keynotes. Please contact me if interested

I understand the challenge of finding just the right speaker. It is one thing to be comfortable in front of a class of students and quite another to be comfortable to stand in front of a room of adults. I love them both and find great inspiration feeding off the energy of the crowds.

What You Can Expect

Here’s what you can expect from me:

  2. A highly energized presentation that is not a sit and get. I infuse collaboration, conversation, and doing/making things so the minds of the audience are challenged.
  3. An announcement about your event on my blog and social media channels. (This assumes that your event is open to the public and you want additional visibility for it.) I always blog about my experiences as well as share out reflections after each presentation.
  4. A prepared, highly visual presentation focused on achieving the outcomes you want with your audience. I won’t do death by powerpoint!
  5. A custom resource page, exclusively created for your attendees. I love to have a resource page for everyone to go back and refer to so we can keep the conversation going after the presentation.

The Most Requested Topics

Keynote 1

Making Yourself Into A Maker

Come ready to make things happen. In under one hour we will explore the elements that make makerspaces successful and inspiring for students. However, this alone is not enough. How do we take the culture of makerspaces and begin to shift these elements into all classrooms, hallways, and our schools as a whole? The goal of this talk is to get you thinking about the amazing work you are already doing, reshuffling the deck of awesome you have created to change our perspectives of learning and do more awesome! Be ready to rock and roll(literally). Be ready to merge the ideas of makerspace and classroom into a cohesive vision no matter what subject or grade level you teach.

Keynote 2

Creating Equal Access to STEM Learning for all Students

STEM is everywhere. It is the phrase that everyone is claiming they are doing and every product claims is STEM. How do we really look at STEM and ensure that we are building and creating opportunities for educators and students to feel empowered by the possibilities of STEM? How do we weave in the A in STEAM? How does it look? How do we get started? Lots of questions that need some answers so let’s explore ideas to get started.

Keynote Workshop Follow Up
MAKE a Positive Difference in the Life of a Student Workshop

In this workshop you will be tasked with a series of creative challenges to create a positive ripple in the universe. The challenges are designed to achieve two goals. The first goal is to trust in yourself that you are indeed a maker and creative. Once we get the juices flowing we will head towards goal two for you to MAKE a gift to MAKE a positive impact in the lives of students. This workshop will allow you to learn new skills, trust in your abilities, and more importantly spread some good in the world and in the lives of students. Come ready to explore, make, and walk away feeling empowered. We will be living the slogan of “Making a positive difference in the life of each and every student daily,” through a hands on approach and exploration of experiencing that “Failure is not an option, but an opportunity.” More importantly, these are ideas that can be tweaked and hacked to be used in the classroom.

Escape Boredom (Literally) – Full Day Workshop

Participants will take a trip to a “puzzle room,” where we will collaboratively solve a series of puzzles in order to escape! Once back, we will unpack and hack the experience to co-design our own.

Trapped in classrooms where only boring lectures and rote memorization are occurring, many students dream of escape… But what if the very act of escaping from a classroom became an opportunity for all sorts of deeper learning? In this summit, we will take a trip to a “puzzle room,” where we will have a limited amount of time to collaboratively solve a series of puzzles in order to escape! After that experience, we will hack the puzzle room experience and explore how to use available materials and space in our schools to create similar collaborative, problem solving experiences for our students! No more boring classrooms!

Building Deeper Learning in the Classroom through Projects – 1 or 2 Day Workshop
Learning does not have to be drag. For far too long students associate school as boring and not engaging. It is a place they HAVE to be at during the day. What if we flipped things around and created projects where students WANT to be at school? They want to come to your room to learn.

This course is designed to really challenge your thinking and teaching practices along with your comfort zones. You will be tasked with developing a project to be used in the upcoming school year.

You will work on your own and with others to build and design a classroom experience that transforms the way teachers and students view learning. Come ready to put on your learner hat and walk away with something you can implement in your classroom the next school year.

Threat to Inequity Workshop – Half Day or Full Day Workshop

What are the causes and consequences of prejudice and injustice? This workshop will explore this driving question through a two pronged approach. Participants need to come ready to challenge their thinking, their teaching practices, and their learning cultures. Each participant will be creating their own project based learning unit with this driving question as a focus while also learning how to eliminate these concepts along with inequity in their classrooms. Come ready to share your expertise, be pushed to new levels of thought, and walk away with a project you can use in your classroom. https://sites.google.com/view/inequity/home?authuser=1

Google Classroom: 21st Century Learning Design Workshop

Did you know that there is a tool called Google Classroom? If you did not, then welcome to a two day learning experience that will get you brought up to speed with all the amazing tools at your fingertips that can streamline your learning as well as your students. The beauty of Google and many other platforms is that there is unlimited opportunities to use third party tools to create an online space that is perfect to your classroom environment. What are you waiting for? Come join us.

The purpose of this workshop is to learn how teachers use Google Classroom in their classrooms. Additionally, we will be pushing the boundaries of the tool to explore how we can personalize the experience to push learning to the next level using 21st century learning design. Teachers will learn about best practices for using Google Classroom, learn of apps that work with Google Classroom, and finally, create lesson plans that include these apps in their Google Classroom courses.

Creating a Google Classroom: Building the Groundwork for a Successful School Year
What do you need to know about Google and all the tools for your classroom? It seems like as soon as you learn one tool it is either replaced by another or new features pop up. This workshops is designed to give you the foundation to have your classroom ready to go for the upcoming school year. This PD will open your eyes to tips, tricks, tools, and more importantly how they can help you as an educator reach more students in real time feedback and communication loops. Come ready to learn and more importantly ready to build, design, and create the things needed to start your school year off right!

The Upside Down Universe of Learning

This session will explore all the tools that don’t feel like they will help you learn and be productive, but have so much to offer. Sometimes stepping away from the action allows for a better mindset. Think brain breaks for adults but with a little twist these can easily be used in your classroom(for the most part!). Come learn to think differently in this fun session where we will have some exciting moments of what it means to think outside the box and then apply to the classroom.

Sphero to Engage All Levels of Learning including Adults!

Ready to tickle your brain in a creative showdown between teams entering the Olympic arena of coding and playing? Come prepared to tinker, hack and play with Sphero Robots. Build, code and race to see which team garners Sphero Ninja status. If bragging rights are on your conference bucket list then Sphero Smackdown is for you! Disclaimer: Participants may experience uncontrollable laughter, brain farts, temper tantrums and more.

This session will explore robotics, engineering, and the even more importance concept of play and tinkering. We will spend time learning to program the Sphero Robot. Once we have the basics understood, then teams will be divided to see who can earn the rights to baddest, fastest, most accurate robot title through a series of challenges.

Build and Creating Global Connections in the Classroom

Want to connect your classroom with the world and promote global citizenship? Using Skype and other tools, you can connect students across town, around the world, bring in industry experts, or take virtual field trips. Learn how you can connect with other educators, get lesson plans, start a project and more. I will save you the headache of searching and show you where to go and how to do find the people you need!
