Great list! We discovered that rotary cutters (usually used with fabric!) on self healing mats work GREAT for cuts, both straight and curvy, across cardboard!
Thanks for sharing! do you have a rotary cutter that you prefer over the others? Looks like I have a new tool to buy!
Well, I bought the cheapest ones at Walmart so I could purchase more of them! So far so good!
Great to hear your thoughts on these different cutting tools! Here at Makedo, the Canary knives are a big hit.
We are also quite excited to have updated versions of our own Safe-saw about to start production – there will be a plastic blade (an update of the current Safe-saw) for the younger makers, and also a ‘Pro’ level metal bladed version that neatly fits between the Canary precision cardboard tool and the child-friendly Makedo Safe-saw.
One tip when using the Makedo Safe-saw that can really help for younger makers:
Punch a row of holes about 1-inch apart along the line of the cut… and then ‘join the dots’ with the saw!
This works well for straight lines, rounded or circular forms and also details such as window cutouts etc.
We look forward to further cardboard construction insights from you, these posts are a fantastic resource.
