LEGO EV3 Summer Robotics Camp – Day 2 Dragster

For our second day of camp we had another amazing day. Seriously, what an outstanding group of students who are so focused on building, coding, and having fun that I cannot believe how lucky we are to work with these kids.

We gave them the challenge of drag racing which they loved. We started out by giving them some sample code to remix which we felt was important to help them learn some new coding blocks and to help them think differently. We expanded the code to show them sensors, motors, flow blocks, and how to use the sensor blocks to reset the timer. What I love about this challenge is that they can take the basic idea and remix it to be their own.

The day before we challenged them to think about

  • Gear ratios to speed up the robot
  • Weight and friction of tires and chasis
  • Weight balance to keep robot moving straight

Once again this challenge allows all levels of experience to have success. As you will see in the video we celebrated any robot that could navigate straight enough to reach the finish line. Some used gears which increased speed quite a bit. We had a blast watching, learning, and tinkering our dragsters to constantly improve.

This allows us to reach each student at their given ability level and experience. Once again we are blown away by what these students are capable of accomplishing in about 75 minutes of build time once we do some exploratory teaching and setting them free.

Our camp page has directions on the course build, sample code, how we bult a timer finish line gate, and more. Check it out!

Onwards to day 3 and 4 which are going to be insane builds and challenges using bluetooth!
