Let’s get into the action and begin to prepare your makerspace for success. The first two episodes were all about preparation.
Today we start. We plunge into our space to create optimal conditions for learning for ourselves and students.
Pre Assessment
Your first task is a pre-assessment. Take a picture(s) or video tour of your space as is. Many of you will want to tidy up first, but don’t do it. This is to help you see where you are in the journey and where you end up.
Many of you might be in a good space as you cleaned up as school finished, but perhaps you have spill over in your garage, your home office, etc.
Choose where you are going to begin and capture the space.
Here we go!
Start small.
You, of course, know this. Don’t do anything crazy or overboard. Simply take the first step. Simply take some time to muse on this idea today. No matter how crammed your classroom, learning space, media center, closet, car, backpack is, no matter how disorganized your life might feel right now, you have the power to change it. You can be more impactful as an educator with less materials and space to teach more.
Remember, it is not the physical possessions that make a great educator. It is the mindset and relationships we develop. Neither one of these require buying items.
Today is day 1 of action.
As you have read this quote thousands of times, but perhaps have never personally embraced it. Today you need to take it in and understand that it all begins with a step in the right direction.
It is a simple step.
We are going to focus on your media collection. I am talking about magazines, articles, printed off documents, handouts, etc. You know these piles we all have that have a really cool idea, book suggestion, project guide, etc. that we will do “one day” when we have time! If you are like me, then you have a lot of these resources sitting around doing nothing but causing stress.
It is time to conquer the pile(s)
You got this!
Be sure to share your photo to this post as this helps hold everyone accountable. And it also gives us reminders on our phones throughout the day!
We can’t wait to see you take your first step! Today we simply gather and begin to sort.
