My wife and I are attempting to put in some structure and routine to our household this week. After a week of chilling as it was our spring break, we realize that we must have a routine. All of us need it for our mental well being. We are not trying to recreate school; we are not worried about our kids regressing; we are not worried about standards.
But we care that we as a family take care of ourselves mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I put together this schedule, which could be a total disaster.
We are focused on life skills.
I don’t want to do into deep detail on the schedule because it is nothing fancy and it might fail miserably. Basically, we have put in the following routines.
- 60 minutes of reading and writing of our own choice.
- 60 minute block of time for exercise. Each day someone has to come up with a family activity, but you don’t have to join. I want everyone to learn how to contribute and have a chance at trying something new. However, we don’t want to be a school where you are forced to do an activity. We also know that we won’t exercise the entire time(I am too out of shape to do so!) so any remaining time can be ours to use as we please.
- Lunch – each day a person has to prep a lunch for the family. This could prove interesting, but while we are home, why not teach our kids some life skills like cooking!
- New Skill – everyone learns something new that we always wanted to learn but used time as an excuse to not try. What is interesting is that while this should be our most exciting block, everyone is nervous about this! It proves that they have trained us in school and life to wait to be told what to think and what to learn. I hope to break this mold.
- Chores – this block also won’t take an hour, but we will all do a chore of some sort each day to keep up on the house while we work, play, and chill.
The kids are not excited.
And I am not sharing this because I think we are special. Rather, I am sharing because if you notice on Thursday we are doing a family Show and Tell of our new learning. I want to expand this to everyone, and it is the point of this post.
I want to invite you do your own week of new skill learning. Pick something you want to learn more about, learn a new skill, explore a new hobby, crafts, DIY, etc.
Share in a comment to this post or wherever on social media you read this to hold yourself accountable.
Invite your kids and family.
On Friday I will host an online session where we will do an online Show and Tell. Please reach out to me so I can send you the link and details. I will post the Show and Tell to YouTube when done, so please know we will go live to inspire others. Each week while we are at home we will run a new Show and Tell of our new skill each week.
Are you ready? Come join us.
And now I must go wake my family to start the day!
