#25daysofmaking Day 30 Design a Spinning Toy

Ericsson argues that there is little evidence that people who achieve exceptional performance ever get there through any means other than carefully guided practice—perfect practice.

Dear all my maker friends,

We have reached the end of this amazing project. 30 projects for you to use, tinker, remix, and explore. If nothing else do these projects to learn new skills. You never know when you need a skill until the moment strikes.

I hope you have enjoyed this little project that turned into something much greater than I could have ever imagined. As I shared back on project 25 this has grown into perhaps my favorite thing of 2018 for the work I have done and that is because of you. You, the people who shared a project. You, the community who has stuck with me through the projects. You, the makers who have attempted to do the project. It is all because of you!

As we share the final project for this fun little month of learning please don’t be strangers and disappear into the ether. Continue to reach out and share ideas, new learnings, questions, and more on the
#25daysofmaking hashtag.

This will be the last newsletter you receive from me for a while if you have signed up for the newsletter. I know 30 days of another item in your inbox can be a lot. I do plan to follow up with a collection of submitted projects and some follow up events.

A few things to be on the lookout for:

1. I plan to host a Show and Tell event via YouTube where people can join the video call to showcase what they made, what they learned, and anything else. Details to come once I figure out how to actually do this idea.

2. In the spring I hope to run something similar to this, but the focus will be on students. Now that we have had fun as adults sharing, I think it would be outstanding to do something similar but with students sharing how to make their projects. Might be a good next project for your students to work on. Details to come.

3. I am beginning to set up my podcast schedule to feature more educators for 2019. I would love to highlight your makerspace, talk about room layout, scheduling, and anything else you want to bring to the table. If interested, then please send me an email.

Thank you once again to everyone who contributed a project. This is so inspiring to see the outreach to help educators and students push their skills to new levels of learning.

I hope you enjoy this final project and continue to visit the site to gain inspiration for new ideas from all 30 as the year progresses.

Create

So what about the project today? Day 30 is a perfect project to wrap up the 30 days. Today you are asked to make a spinning toy. The concept is simple, but the design can be anything but simple once we start to learn the beauty of physics.

You can use any material that you have available. Becky has images of using LEGO pieces as well as basic maker supplies. You can choose the constraint of materials to bring the ideas to life.

Be creative. Develop some challenges. Whose spinner spins the longest? Can you create your own little Beyblade tournament? Can this be part of a larger Rube Goldberg contraption? Once again so many opportunities for learning from one idea.

Head over to the page to check out the details and get making.

Share

Add your project or any other projects you are working on through these options to share how you approached today’s challenge or the one from yesterday. Then, check out and comment on some other examples when they are shared.

Besides using the hashtag #25daysofmaking on Instagram and Twitter I am also posting the projects over on Facebook so you can interact on this platform as well.

Finally, don’t forget to head over to Flipgrid and introduce yourself and/or your students!

Reflect

This element is important! Don’t neglect reflection on your own learning. We must be lifelong learners and be models to our students.

Take a moment to reflect on your creative process by sharing with the hashtags and other mediums. Let us start a conversation about this concept. How did remixing help you? What questions do you still have about remixing?
