#25daysofmaking Day 29 Makey Makey Holiday Door Display

I — I didn’t see you, sir.” “Strange how nearsighted being invisible can make you,” said Dumbledore…”

Dear home supply maker designers,

Welcome to day 29. I am writing you all once again from my couch with my coffee and my big old bulldog on my lap preparing for the day. Before we dive into the project I wanted to share a story from yesterday. We have been remodeling a room in our house. We are getting very close to finishing up, but we failed yesterday. We attempted create a painted stencil design on our tile around our fireplace and for some reason the paint peeled off the previous paint thus creating a huge mess and ruining the tile around the fireplace.

I share this little story because when we try things we will sometimes make mistakes. Things won’t work. However, this cannot be the reason to not try or to give up. Instead we need to analyze the situation, look at what did not work, and make a new plan.

As we draw to a close with only one more project to go to complete these 30 projects please remember this: Don’t be afraid to fail in front of your students just like we did with our kids.

Don’t be afraid to try new things because what happens during these moments of learning?

And if we mess up, so what? Does it really matter that much in the big picture of things?

Enjoy!

Create

So what about the project today? Day 29 is all about taking household materials to make really fun and decorative displays. Colleen Graves shows us that we don’t need conductive tape as she challenged herself to use what she had around the house – foil, wrapping paper, glue sticks, etc.

Even if you don’t need to make a holiday display how can you remix this concept to be used to create an important part of history, a book report, a display of science learning, teaching a math concept, or interactive art?

This project is great! As soon as I finish my fireplace project I plan on doing this one with my youngest kid.

And if you have not yet listened to my podcast with Colleen, then I suggest you listen to it while you work!

Have some fun with it and we can’t wait to see your work!

Share

Add your project or any other projects you are working on through these options to share how you approached today’s challenge or the one from yesterday. Then, check out and comment on some other examples when they are shared.

Besides using the hashtag #25daysofmaking on Instagram and Twitter I am also posting the projects over on Facebook so you can interact on this platform as well.

Finally, don’t forget to head over to Flipgrid and introduce yourself and/or your students!

Reflect

This element is important! Don’t neglect reflection on your own learning. We must be lifelong learners and be models to our students.

Take a moment to reflect on your creative process by sharing with the hashtags and other mediums. Let us start a conversation about this concept. How did remixing help you? What questions do you still have about remixing?
