4 Learning Opportunities While At Home

We need to remind ourselves of what we can achieve while we have time. Many of us are being asked to stay home during this time of unknown.

While we can get overwhelmed with this new frontier, we can also embrace the opportunity given to us while we slow down a bit.

I hope to add some things to the blog each day that might keep us going. I know there are many online communities and forums already established, but I would also like to add to these places and more based on what I can offer.

Each day or every few days I will post a chance to learn, expand our thinking, and create an online discourse that can be used for both adults and educators and students.

I hope it is helpful as we venture into this new space of learning.

Problems With Waste Project – this is a project I launched with our local landfill, but anyone can access it. We have classrooms around the world exploring this project. While the timeline will need to be adjusted, this is a project that covers many standards, provides a chance for hands on learning, and more provides authentic connections via video and online discussions. We are adjusting things a bit to hold some online video chats and Q&A, but in the meantime, feel free to sign up, get involved, and get started. Everything you need is on the site, even while we work to tweak things as we go.

Problems With Waste Project – Steps 2 &3 – we just started steps 2 and 3, but you can easily get caught up in no time!

Purposeful Play With LEGO – This is a free online course I am running for educators, but anyone can use the content. You can see that we are exploring the universal constructs. I am working to update the site to provide the rest of the steps and project and make everything accessible. We have a FB group and more. Great ideas for you to experiment with as a teacher as well as to use with your kids at home. Come join the fun, get hands on, and learn at the same time. There is plenty here to get started while I work to publish the rest of the content. Course link

Roundtable Book Discussions with Coffeechug, Coffee, and Chapters

Like everything, I am adjusting a bit. I have this plan to read books on my shelves and to talk with people. Here are the book titles, format, and past episodes. Now that we have more time I can more flexible in reading and talking. Look at the list and let me know if you want to join me on the show to talk about a book or two. The two not mentioned on the link that we will talk about will be Vintage Innovation by John Spencer and Upstream by Dan Heath. Let’s read and discuss.

Discord Channel

The final place to explore is my new Discord Channel. Discord is used for video game communities and coding forums. I have created a Coffee For The Brain server that has a few channels already created on Micro:bit, Raspberry Pi, Video Games, LEGO, and Python. I am working to move all my online tutorials, discussions, help, and more to this server. My face to face workshops will no longer be happening and I will move the learning here so you will learn from home along with us. Come join and explore, learn a thing or two. This week I will start a new channel on comparing python coding to Scratch. Let’s learn and share.
