Problems With Waste Project – Steps 2 & 3

The Problem With Waste project is off to a wonderful start. If you want to join there is still time to register and join in on the action. We have only done introductions so you have not missed out on the learning yet.

We have connected as classrooms and shared our current thoughts on waste and garbage. One of the great things about this project is the amount of new learning and perspective changing this will create as students dive deeper into what all goes into the handling of our waste.
This week we move into step 2&3 of the Design Thinking Phase. These two steps have been joined because they seamlessly go together. Please make sure you take some time to check out the information, the slides, and resources available.
Neither one of these steps will take a huge amount of time so you have flexibility in how you want to deliver these next steps. Using the LAUNCH framework by John Spencer and AJ Juliani classrooms can work through some initial inquiry and wonderings before diving into the work. In this project, we have provided a seven part virtual field trip video series at the landfill and other videos about waste along with the new cell they are digging. We are hoping this increases curiosity as students get to see a side of the landfill they may have never realized existed.
Teachers will use the material and slides and use their professional insights to make the content work for them. We have all grade levels represented so an excited element is to witness how the broad age groups work with the content. The educators have a safe space to collaborate using Google Classsroom so there is just as much learning for the teachers as there is for the students.
I set aside two weeks for this part of the project to help teachers plan. Some of you are joining late. Some of you have a spring break during this time. Some of you have limited access to your students each week. I hope that by March 23rd we can get most of you to the same place of work as we dive into the big learning of the project.
If some of you reading this want to join, please know there is plenty of time to sign up and fit right into the learning.
While these first few steps are small steps, they are very important.

Please check the website for all materials

I can’t wait to see what ideas and questions the students generate the next few weeks.
