A Triumph of the Human Spirit: The West Liberty Student Journey from LEGO to Prosthetic Innovation

In the district of West Liberty High School, a story unfolded that would redefine the possible—a narrative of resilience, community, and innovation, centered around a remarkable student named Eric and his life-altering journey with prosthetics.

I was able to experience a live virtual session of Eric and his team deliver his message to over 350 people from over 16 locations globally.

The Emergence of a Visionary

From a young age, Eric was just another kid with a passion for toys, especially LEGO. But behind his love for playful creativity was a deep-seated challenge; Eric was navigating life with only six fingers. Wearing a white cast to mask his difference, he lived in fear of judgment, a shadow over his childhood joys.

The transformation began in the supportive environment fostered by his teacher Jackie Henderson. Their bond, formed in fifth grade, became the catalyst for a journey of personal and academic growth. With her guidance, Eric found the confidence to embrace his individuality and turn it into a beacon of innovation.

The Power of Hand: A Team with a Mission

As Eric’s prototypes evolved—from simple LEGO structures to complex designs incorporating Arduino and muscle sensors—he not only crafted a series of prosthetic hands but also sculpted a newfound confidence. This transformation didn’t go unnoticed; his classmates, Pearson, Bryson, and Betsy, witnessed his emergence from a shy child into an inspiring figure, prompting them to form ‘The Power of Hand.’

This team of driven students rallied around Eric’s vision, each bringing unique skills to the table. From managing social media to coordinating tasks and leading engineering efforts, they embodied the spirit of collaboration. Their mission: to use Eric’s story to inspire and empower others facing physical or mental challenges.

Community Engagement: The Foundation of Success

The project garnered overwhelming community support, as evidenced by the successful LEGO drive, which gathered nearly $2,000 worth of LEGO in just an hour. This community engagement was a testament to the power of collective effort, and it wasn’t long before the University of Iowa’s Protostudios reached out to hopefully in the future help with resources and support to aid in the mission.

Embracing the Emotional Journey

The most poignant aspect of Eric’s story is the emotional landscape he traversed. A particularly moving moment came when he first used his prosthetic hand to grab an object. The room was thick with emotion as Eric and Mrs. Henderson shared tears of joy—a testament to the journey’s profound personal impact.

Inspiring the Next Generation

The team extended a challenge to others and any of you reading this encouraging students worldwide to innovate. The judging criteria—functionality, sustainability, and creativity—reflected the ethos of Eric’s journey. The endeavor wasn’t just about creating useful tools; it was about inspiring others to see beyond their limitations and harness their potential.

The Final Message: A Beacon of Hope

In his closing remarks, Eric delivered a powerful message about overcoming flaws and pursuing dreams. He stood as a living proof that with time, effort, and unwavering determination, anything is possible. This was not just a story of a boy and his prosthetic hand; it was a narrative of breaking barriers, fostering potential, and the unyielding human spirit.

Conclusion: A Legacy of Empowerment

Eric’s journey is a beacon that illuminates the profound impact of empathy, creativity, and collaboration in education. It is a narrative that pushes the importance of education and schools to think beyond the traditional confines of the education system through the journey of Eric, Mrs. Henderson, and his peers, sharing the story to issuing a global invitation to action, inspiring us all to transform our unique challenges into opportunities for innovation and growth.

Our gratitude extends to Jackie Henderson, an educator whose unwavering commitment to her students has catalyzed this transformative journey. Her dedication to reaching out and making a difference has not only shaped Eric’s path but has also served as a powerful example of the influence a teacher can have on their students.

We also celebrate the students who have committed wholeheartedly to this project, creating substantial content and taking authentic learning to new heights in such a short time. Their dedication has inspired me personally, opening my eyes to the beauty of human pedagogy and the power of students as agents of change in both education and society.

Special thanks to Susan Waddell, our MBAEA graphic artist, whose poster design and graphics have given this story a visual heartbeat. And to Whitney Smith-Bringolf, MBAEA Communication Facilitator, whose efforts in sharing out the information have allowed schools to connect and become part of this inspiring journey.

As we acknowledge these contributions, we recognize that ‘The Power of Hand’ stands as a testament to what can be achieved when educators prioritize relationships and students are empowered to become leaders and changemakers. This is not just a story about overcoming adversity; it is a celebration of the human spirit’s capacity to inspire, innovate, and ignite change.

Join us in celebrating this triumph and be part of the continuing journey of empowerment and innovation.
