Greek Myths to Integrate Literacy, History, Physical Computing, and Computer Science

As computer science continues to increase awareness in schools through state adoptions of standards and exposure we must work to figure out a proper means to finding where to insert computer science in the school day.

Most teachers are already being asked to squeeze in 20 hours of teaching into a 8 hour school day so to ask for one more thing is a deathwish in education. This does not mean giving up hope for computer science and hands on learning, but to identify areas where the work seamlessly aligns to the work already being done by adding a splash of awesome to the current structures.

One of my focuses lately has been the infusion of computer science and STEM into literacy and social studies.

I would like to share two projects I have developed as I work with some outstanding 4th grade educators who are looking to use Micro:bits in their classroom to bring learning alive.

Last year we developed some mini projects as they read The Wild Robot Escapes and it was amazing what the students created and developed.

This year we have decided to weave things into Greek Mythology. So far, I have been able to complete two project guides and am working on a few more.

The goal with this project is that each myth will introduce students to a mini challenge of problem solving using MakeCode and the Micro:bit leading up to a project where they will develop their own project as they develop their own myth and characters.

Take a look at the first two projects. I would love to know what you think. I still have standards to add and a few other details, but the bulk of the work has been completed. I hope to have another project posted next week as well.

If nothing else, I hope it ignites new ideas and inspires. Enjoy
