Human Pedagogy Hot Take #1: Echoes of Learning: Breaking the Cycle of AI-Dependent Education

Human Pedagogy Hot Take 1

If I complete an assignment, then I don’t want an AI algorithm to assess my work and thinking. I want a human who has a connection to me to provide authentic feedback. Seeking genuine human connection in learning is one of the most important aspects of learning – from our peers, educators, experts, and ourselves.

Now, AI for feedback IS helpful and very much applicable, but perhaps we should teach students(and ourselves) how to leverage AI to self assess and utliize as thought partner during their learning journey continuum instead of only using AI for detection of “cheating” to erode trust.

I mean if we give an assignment as homework, do nothing with it except grade the final product once submitted with little interaction along the way, then I challenge us to think what is the point of the assignment why would using AI matter if the task doesn’t matter to you?

Or to be more blunt, if we don’t educate ourselves and students how to use AI while in the process of learning and not just to create or finish a final product/assignment, then all of us become a stochastic parrots generating tasks that lose all human connection and simply get fed into another stochastic parrot grading them.

The goal? To prevent a cycle of AI-generated work and AI-driven grading.

Because in a world where AI does all the talking, are we truly learning, or just echoing?
