#25daysofmaking Day 16 UNRULY SPLATS! REINDEER CROSSING : A SUPER SIMPLE SEASONAL GAME

“If you get stuck, get away from your desk. Take a walk, take a bath, go to sleep, make a pie, draw, listen to music, meditate, exercise; whatever you do, don’t just stick there scowling at the problem.”—Hilary Mantel

Dear all reindeer game controllers,

Welcome to day 16. These days are flying by and there is simply not enough time to absorb all the outstanding projects being shared. Each day I hit submit I want to run down to my shop and start building. This past week has been insane and I am sure many of you can relate. As I work with educators who are looking to implement makerspace, hands on learning, and design thinking we must also think about our learning space.

With the quote in mind shared above be sure you think about creating conditions and systems in your space to allow students to get a break from it all if they hit that wall. We do it naturally as adults, but this is something we need to teach and model for our students. Sometimes that little break can provide us with all we need to move forward.

The project today comes from the amazing people over at Unruly Splats. I read about them in Inc. magazine and fell in love with their idea of combining active play with coding and computational thinking. Listen to the podcast we did about the journey for them to develop this product as it contains so many good lessons for us and our students to remember.

Create

The 16th project is a project that can really allow active play to be infused into the making and learning. This is very important especially this time of year!

Even if you don’t have the Unruly Splats please don’t count this project out. They provide an app to do this project. Additionally, as they talk in the podcast the prototypes were originally paper, Makey Makey, and Arduino. Perhaps your students could make their own prototype Unruly Splats and then do the project.

Always see barriers as opportunities for the next great challenge for learning.

We hope you enjoy the 16th day of making project.

Share

Add your project or any other projects you are working on through these options to share how you approached today’s challenge or the one from yesterday. Then, check out and comment on some other examples when they are shared.

Besides using the hashtag #25daysofmaking on Instagram and Twitter I am also posting the projects over on Facebook so you can interact on this platform as well.

Finally, don’t forget to head over to Flipgrid and introduce yourself and/or your students!

Reflect

This element is important! Don’t neglect reflection on your own learning. We must be lifelong learners and be models to our students.

Take a moment to reflect on your creative process by sharing with the hashtags and other mediums. Let us start a conversation about this concept. How did remixing help you? What questions do you still have about remixing?
