“Structure is required for creativity.”—Twyla Tharp |
Dear all my gamer friends,
Welcome to day 18. As we close in on the holiday and a much needed winter break we sometimes need to infuse learning with entertainment. This project is a perfect blend of both. It comes from The Nerdy Teacher who is an amazing educator that has done wonders for the world of makerspace, project based learning, and creating a learning culture for all.
I was honored to have him on my podcast a few months ago
063: Making Learning Awesome with Nerdy Teacher https://coffeeforthebrain.com/063/
Be sure to check out his website
TheNerdyTeacher.com and all of his books.
And more importantly let’s get making!
Create
The 18th project is a project that is so much to make and use! We are making game controllers using Makey Makey. The beauty of this project is that there are many methods to make the controller. As the educator you create the structure and constraints for what you want the students to use. As the quote above states, we cannot have complete openness. Provide the constraints and let them work within that sandbox.
We hope you enjoy the 18th day of making project.Â
Some of you may have done this project before so please share those pictures and examples. We would love to see all the ways in which people create these controllers.
Finally, if you need some games to get started, then here are some from a workshop I run.
Share
Add your project or any other projects you are working on through these options to share how you approached today’s challenge or the one from yesterday. Then, check out and comment on some other examples when they are shared.
Besides using the hashtag #25daysofmaking on Instagram and Twitter I am also posting the projects over on Facebook so you can interact on this platform as well.
Finally, don’t forget to head over to Flipgrid and introduce yourself and/or your students!
Reflect
This element is important! Don’t neglect reflection on your own learning. We must be lifelong learners and be models to our students.
Take a moment to reflect on your creative process by sharing with the hashtags and other mediums. Let us start a conversation about this concept. How did remixing help you? What questions do you still have about remixing?
