I have worked to adapt the many models of stomp rocket launchers found online to create one that be used both indoors and outdoors.
This model has been used by our preschool program at my non-profit to elementary schools for STEM day events, community events, and more.
The premise is simple. Make this launcher. Cut some 12 inch PVC pipe to create the rocket tube and let kids create.
Many people ask for wing templates, but I don’t like to provide these. The goal with learning is experimentation. Have some rocket examples sitting out, but let the kids test ideas out.
- What if I have 3 fins?
- what if I have 4 fins?
- What if I add more weight to the nose?
- What if I make the nose round? Cone? Flat?
- What if I use cardboard? Cardstock?
Let them experiment.
The beauty of this launcher is that it has an adjustable nose so you can change the angle of flight which can lead to even more experimentation if you wish.
Have fun!
Can’t wait to try this with my iLab! Great end of the year (go outside!!) project! Thanks!
