Wild Robot Escapes + Micro:bits = Engaged Learners

I have been working and supporting two amazing elementary educators. These 4th grade teachers decided not to just “survive” these last few weeks of school, but instead have chosen to try something new and push the boundaries of learning.

The students have been reading The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown which is an amazing book. To work on the reading standard of informational text we have equipped all the students with Micro:bits. The goal here is to create applicable learning connected to standards. As students learn how to code they will need to readvarious resource documents and materials as they navigate the world of physical computing and coding. The kids have been hard at work, but the other day they sent me a question via Flipgrid as they were stuck on a new project. It was a great moment in learning where students are being advocates of their own learning and seeking help as we all do when stuck.

They needed help understanding how to get the Micro:bits to communicate via radio signals.

I created a short video tutorial that helps them out and hopefully others who are learning how to code. I even added a few bonus ideas to keep them thinking about the possibilities. I am sharing the video here on the blog in case it helps you or inspires you to try something like this with your students.

Enjoy!

Here is our site where we are creating coding and physical computing projects to go along with the book. Feel free to use, provide suggestions, and share new project ideas. It is in beta as we work to fine tune it all!
